What we lay

Clay, composite, porcelain, tarmac and gravel

We lay clay and composite brick sets for load-bearing driveways, and porcelain and Indian sandstone where the finish matters most. Whichever you choose, what goes under it is built the same way.

Block paved driveway with feature panels

Block Paving

Clay and composite brick sets laid for load bearing, with the edge courses restrained properly so the pattern stays true and the edges never creep.

Indian sandstone patio laid in random courses

Patios & Porcelain

Porcelain and Indian sandstone, laid on a full mortar bed and pointed by hand. The part of the garden you look at every day of the summer.

New tarmac driveway with block paved edging and apron

Tarmac

Laid hot and rolled, finished with a block or kerb edge. The most sensible way to cover a long drive properly without cutting corners underneath it.

Golden resin bound driveway with charcoal block edging

Resin & Gravel

A permeable surface over a solid base, edged so it stays where it was put. No loose stone tracked into the road and nowhere for water to sit.

Feature diamond block panel joining a tarmac driveway

Feature Work

Circles, diamonds, contrast borders and radial courses cut and set on site. It is the detail that separates a paved drive from a proper one.

Curved brick step and radial block apron to conservatory doors

Steps & Approaches

Curved steps, aprons and paths that meet the house properly, cut to the radius rather than filled in with mortar and hoped for.

Nobody sits down and writes a letter about a bad driveway

"Gerry was so kind and patient answering my many questions. His crew of workmen are extremely hard working, and checked in with me every step of the way. Most importantly they were respectful of our property, nothing was too much trouble."

The family

Gerry, and the sons the firm is named after

Read the reviews and one name comes up in nearly every single one. Gerry is the man who comes out to look at your drive, prices it, and is on the end of the phone afterwards. Customers also name the crew by name: Aidan, Anthony and Louis.

That matters more than it sounds. Hiring the best does not mean the most expensive. In fact, engaging a here-today-gone-tomorrow outfit can be an expensive mistake, and it is the one mistake you cannot undo without digging the whole thing up again.

G D & Sons Quality Paving Ltd has been a limited company since 2016, works out of a trade unit on Buildwas Road in Neston, and is one of The Wirral's busiest paving contractors.

How we build it

Why ours does not sink

A driveway fails from the bottom up. Almost every cracked, dipped, weed-split drive on the Wirral failed because somebody saved a day on the digging, and nobody could see it until the second winter.

01

Dig out to depth

The old surface and the soft ground beneath it come out and go on the wagon. Nothing gets raked to the side and buried under your new drive.

02

Sub-base in layers

Type 1 stone laid and compacted in layers rather than one thick dump. This is the part that carries the car for the next twenty years, not the blocks on top.

03

Edges and drainage

Edge restraints haunched in concrete, and the surface water given somewhere legal to go, before a single block or tonne of tarmac is laid.

04

Lay, joint and sweep up

Laid, cut in, jointed or rolled, the site swept and the waste taken with us. We walk the finished drive with you before the van leaves.

5 Year guarantee

Against sinkage and subsidence, from a limited company with a trade unit, a company number and a reputation on the Wirral it is not about to spend.
